The 5 Mbps Stress Test — How Much AI Work Can Filipino VAs Do on Slow Internet?

Unveiling AI Realities: A Filipino VA's Internet Speed Test

If you’re a Filipino VA working from home in Manila, Quezon City, or anywhere in Metro Manila, you know the reality: ₱990/month gets you 25 Mbps download, but only 5 Mbps upload with Sky Fiber.

Silicon Valley assumes everyone has fiber. But here’s the truth most AI marketing ignores:

  • Upload speed matters more than download when you’re sending prompts and files to AI
  • Video and image generation can take 15+ minutes to download
  • Text-based AI tools work surprisingly well even on 5 Mbps

I’ve been living in Manila for 12+ years, and testing AI tools in this exact environment since ChatGPT launched in late 2022. This is not a marketing benchmark. This is what actually happens when you try to use ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini on a real Manila internet connection.

Testing AI in Metro Manila: Environment and Methodology

Location: Quezon City, Metro Manila Internet: Sky Fiber (Upload: 5 Mbps / Download: 25 Mbps) Cost: ₱990/month Device: Acer Nitro gaming laptop (16GB RAM, Intel Core i7, RTX 4050) Backup: Globe mobile tethering (15 Mbps but unstable)

Test Method: I ran API speed tests measuring Time to First Token (TTFT) — the moment you start seeing a response after hitting send. This is the metric that matters for real VA work.

AI Speed Showdown: Ranking Performance on Limited Bandwidth

========== SUMMARY ========== Gemini 2.5 Flash : 2.558 sec OpenAI gpt-4o-mini : 3.290 sec OpenAI gpt-4.1-mini : 3.400 sec Claude 3.5 Haiku : 4.127 sec =============================

Gemini 2.5 Flash: The Champion of Speed on 5 Mbps Internet

Fastest response time. If you’re on free tier and need speed, Gemini wins.

Best for:

  • Quick research
  • Fast email drafts
  • Client reply templates

Limitation: Gemini’s free tier has daily limits. If you hit the cap, you’re stuck until tomorrow.

ChatGPT gpt-4o-mini: The Reliable Workhorse on Slow Connections

Most reliable on slow internet. Text responses start streaming almost immediately.

Best for:

  • Code generation
  • Long-form content
  • Template creation
  • SEO optimization

Why it works well on 5 Mbps: Text is lightweight. Even with slow upload, prompts send fast and responses stream in real-time.

My experience: I’ve written entire Substack articles, built lightweight tools, and generated client proposals with ChatGPT on this connection. No timeouts. No frustration.

Claude 3.5 Haiku: Powerful Analysis, Even on Limited Bandwidth

Slower to start, but powerful when it does.

Best for:

  • Complex analysis
  • Multi-step reasoning
  • Editing and refining content

Limitation on 5 Mbps: Claude doesn’t stream responses in the browser — you wait for the full answer. On slow internet, this can feel slower than it actually is. But 4 seconds to first response is totally usable for client work.

When I use it: For high-stakes client work where quality matters more than speed.

Bandwidth Bottlenecks: AI Tasks to Avoid on Slow Internet

Video Generation Tools

I tested a $29/month AI video tool (Higgsfield) and OpenAI’s Sora.

Result: Downloading a 30-second video took 15+ minutes. I eventually gave up and moved on to other tasks.

Reality check: If you want to build a YouTube-first business using AI video generation in Manila, you need faster internet. 5 Mbps upload is not enough.

Heavy Image Downloads

AI-generated images work fine — but downloading multiple high-res outputs at once will slow you down.

Workaround: Generate images in batches. Download one at a time. Use Canva for quick edits instead of downloading raw files.

Debunking AI Myths: Surprising Discoveries About Speed and Performance

![Surprising AI insights: Discoveries about AI speed and performance on Manila internet.](https://pub-fb67e586ef2346c6bce9243d77d4af1f.r2.dev/blog/content/a8a287af-ced2-4ee0-af2f-34abe406a48f_1024x559.jpeg "Caption: What I Got Wrong (And What Surprised Me "Caption: What I Got Wrong (And What Surprised Me "Caption: Reflecting on AI assumptions: Discoveries about performance in the Philippines.")")")

❌ Myth: Claude is too slow for Manila internet

Reality: Claude works fine. It’s just not streaming in the browser, so it feels slower. But 4 seconds to first response is totally usable for client work.

❌ Myth: You need ChatGPT Plus to work fast

Reality: Gemini’s free tier is faster than ChatGPT Plus on 5 Mbps. If speed is your priority and you’re on a budget, start with Gemini.

✅ Surprise: Text-based AI has almost zero lag

This was the game-changer.

SEO articles? No problem. Client emails? Instant. Code generation? Fast.

The bottleneck isn’t the AI. It’s your upload speed when sending large files or downloading video outputs.

Empowering Filipino VAs: Leveraging AI on Limited Internet Speed

✅ You CAN Use AI on 5 Mbps

If your work is:

  • Writing (emails, blogs, proposals)
  • Coding (web dev, scripts, automation)
  • Research (summaries, competitor analysis)
  • Social media (captions, content calendars)

You’re fine with 5 Mbps.

❌ You NEED Faster Internet If:

  • You’re generating AI videos for clients
  • You’re downloading dozens of high-res images daily
  • You’re building tools that require real-time video streaming

Upgrade path: If you’re earning ₱50k+/month from VA work, consider upgrading to a ₱1,500–₱2,000/month plan with 10–15 Mbps upload.

Manila AI Insights: Lessons Learned from Years of Real-World Testing

![AI tools tested in Manila, Philippines, with years of real-world experience.](https://pub-fb67e586ef2346c6bce9243d77d4af1f.r2.dev/blog/content/b8781ee5-83fb-4322-bc54-10b51bccba4d_1024x559.jpeg "Caption: My Honest Take After 12+ Years in Manila (and 2+ Years Testing AI "Caption: My Honest Take After 12+ Years in Manila (and 2+ Years Testing AI "Caption: After 12+ years in Manila and 2+ years testing AI, here's my honest take on the tools.")")")

I’ve been testing AI tools in this exact environment since ChatGPT launched. I’ve built lightweight tools, written thousands of words, and advised clients — all on ₱990/month Sky Fiber.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

1.Text = Fast. Video = Slow. Plan accordingly.

2.Gemini is underrated. Fastest response time, free tier is solid.

3.ChatGPT Plus pays for itself if you’re coding or writing daily.

4.Claude is worth $20/month for high-quality client deliverables.

5.5 Mbps is not a deal-breaker unless you’re doing video-heavy work.

Tools I Actually Use Daily on 5 Mbps

  • ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) — Code, articles, client emails
  • Claude Pro ($20/month) — Editing, complex analysis
  • Gemini (free tier) — Quick research when I hit usage limits
  • Canva for Teams (₱299/month) — Design without downloading heavy files
  • Notion (free) — Organize everything without lag

Total: ₱2,089/month (~$37 USD)

ROI: These tools save me 10–15 hours/week. At ₱1,000/hour, that’s ₱40,000–₱60,000/month in time saved.

What’s Next?

I’ll be running deeper field tests:

  • API vs. Browser: Which is faster on 5 Mbps?
  • Tethering vs. Home Internet: Is Globe mobile better?
  • Batch workflows: How to maximize output when internet is slow

All tests will be published here with real data, real tools, and real Manila conditions.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need Silicon Valley internet to use AI.

If you’re a Filipino VA, you can compete for global clients using ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini — even on ₱990/month Sky Fiber.

The key is knowing which tools work on slow internet, and which ones don’t.

This is what I’m testing. This is what I’m sharing.
